Nothing Abandoned

Studio Static (Installation shot and c41 double negatives scanned for Video work for Nothing Abandoned), 2017

Studio Static is a video work recently inspired by the labour and limbo which exists in the Irwell house building as it transforms into a new local artist studio space (Paradise Works) giving its new residents (of which I am one) a new purpose – a space not to be abandoned.

Spliced Narratives

Rifling through my studio hoards, I salvaged an image from an abandoned dwelling I found back in 2004. Unsure what to do with the only photograph to be left in an otherwise empty house, the Nothing Abandoned programme gave me the opportunity to finally give the image a new purpose. Working with photomontage and unknown details of my grandfather, who like the found image was I man I never had the pleasure of meeting, the image reflects the possibilities of hazy histories and the ability for new stories when fact and fiction merge. The original image was found in a small filing cabinet, and now returns to a larger than life home as an intervention for this exhibition.

Studio Static & Spliced Narratives were part of Nothing Abandoned group exhibition, 2017. Participating artist and curator.  Programmed as part of Nothing Abandoned project, supported by MMU & Manchester School of Art research fund, at Paradise Works (formally Irwell House Artist Studios CIC) and part of Manifest Arts Festival 2017.

Nothing Abandoned was a recent series of talks, workshops and an exhibition, inspired by ideas of surplus, suspension, usefulness and incompletion. How can stories be relinquished and retold? How do we render new narratives from abandoned material? For more information on Nothing Abandoned programme click here
